Fortress Your Actions
At the Fortress Companies we want to do the right thing in every situation, at all times, and in every relationship. Though there are innumerable ways this commitment to right actions affects the things we do, there are three areas in which we want to always pursue right actions:
Right Actions Legally
The Bible tells us that we should render to Caesar the things that are Caesar and to God the things that are God’s. This was spoken by Jesus in the context of paying taxes. As difficult as it is to do at times, we share the corporate value of right actions legally. Those in the construction and environmental industry are especially conscious of how difficult it is at times to do things legally—especially when the laws and regulations seem contradictory or unfair.
Fortressing our actions means we endeavor at all times to do things within the prescribed boudaries of the law--not only in our personal sphere of life but professional. This becomes a real challenge in our professional lives. It can be costly to follow the laws, to comply with regulations and to pay our taxes and fees. Yet the alternative is even more costly. In addition to the ever-present possibility of being caught for legal infractions, there is also the nagging problem of guilt when we knowingly do things we violate the laws.
Right Actions Ethically
It is possible to be within the boundaries of legality but still unethical. This is especially true when dealing with contracts and expectations of others. When making promises and commitments Fortressing Your Actions means we will always try to conduct ourselves in an ethical and honorable fashion. For example, this means that we won’t try to “sneak” fine print into a contract; to “frontload” costs or take advantage of a person's ignorance in anyway.
Right Actions Relationally
We have spoken much about our relationships to others. Clearly we are setting the standard high for all our interactions with them. This also goes for our relationships within the corporate structure itself: how we relate to colleagues and peers. The same GIVE Method of customer satisfaction that guides our dealings with customers should also guide our interactions with others in the company.
