Making Fortress Living a Reality
Humanly speaking, we believe that Fortress Living values are the best but also utterly impossible to practice consistently! It would be wonderful if we could. But we readily understand that, in our own ability and initiative, we will be unable to follow through on these values.
So why bother to espouse them? Because we also believe that whereas they are “humanly impossible,” impossible by natural effort alone, there is a possibility for “supernatural help” in fulfilling them. Once again, the Bible is our guide and teaches that there are three “supernatural values” that can do in us what we cannot do ourselves:
· Faith
The only way we can hope to think accurately and honestly about ourselves, our products and our customers is by learning to live by “faith”. Faith, as described by the Bible, means a step of obedience based upon the claims or commands of God. In other words, faith means that we do something not because we “feel like it” or even because it “makes sense” but because God tells us to. In fact, sometimes doing something by faith will be opposite our feelings or common sense.
Faith like this is not rooted in some kind of mystical experience—like going to a fortune teller or reading the astrology column for advice. Rather it is a response to something plainly written and understandable, contained in God’s written revelation we call the Bible.
· Hope
“Hope” is a sadly forgotten and misunderstood concept in thinking today. It is a value we want to exalt highly at Fortress. Hope speaks directly to the question of motives and attitudes. How can we have correct motives for serving others? How can we have proper attitudes in pursuing our goals? It all relates to where our “hope” and “expectations” truly lie. We believe the Bible teaches that if all we have to live for is what we see in this life, we are going to be miserable and disappointed. However, if we make choices, decide courses of action, plan strategies in light of the “world to come”—what the Bible calls “eternity”—we will have hope.
· Love
Finally, we uphold the supernatural value of “love”. How can a person or organization actually follow the GIVE Method of customer satisfaction—especially when it is likely to get taken advantage of by unscrupulous customers at times? The answer is, LOVE. This kind of love is not a feeling or emotion we have for someone. It is rather an action designed to benefit the other person—even if it means some kind of immediate loss on our part.
Faith, Hope, Love. The Bible says that, ultimately, these are the values that matter most. While right thinking, right motives and right actions are the natural values of Fortress Companies. We also recognize that the only way to pursue them consistently is through a supernatural means. That’s what faith, hope and love are all about.
